AI in Design: When to Use It (and When to Calm Down)

When to use it and When to Calm Down

Let’s be real: AI is like that eager intern who means well but definitely shouldn’t be running the whole show.
So when should you bring ChatGPT or design AI into the creative process—and when should you kindly say, “Thanks, but I got it from here”?
✅ Use AI When:
- You need ideas and your brain is on a coffee break
ChatGPT is great at throwing out 50 taglines in 3 seconds. Will you use any? Maybe. But it’s a start. - You want fake copy that looks real-ish for mockups
Goodbye, “Lorem Ipsum.” Hello, “Meet our eco-conscious space llama tote bag.” - You need help naming files or explaining designs to clients
Because “FINAL_final_forreal_thisone_USE_THIS_ONE_v3.psd” isn’t working anymore. - You want to look like you did a lot of work in very little time
The client sees brilliance. You see AI-generated magic + 2 Red Bulls.
❌ Don’t Use AI When:
- You actually need it to look good
Let’s be honest. AI doesn’t know kerning from a corn dog. - You’re designing something important—like a brand identity or wedding invite
Unless you want a logo that accidentally looks like a cursed potato. - You plan to send the raw AI output to a client
AI’s job is to get you 60% there. Your job is to make sure it doesn’t embarrass you.
Bottom line?
AI is your creative sidekick. Not the hero. Use it to get unstuck, move faster, and maybe even spark genius. Just don’t let it design your next tattoo.
